A
practical educational component is prevalent throughout each of our activities.
We can be as adventure based or education based as needed. For example,
with a kayak/canoe trip, we may simply cover the basic skills and guide
the class on a tour around a local lake or pond. On the other hand, we may
combine the skills and tour piece with a lesson on water quality, water
dynamics, erosion, aquatic habitat, aquatic insects, environmental awareness,
the watershed, and more. We find that a healthy balance of adventure and
education can have a remarkably positive effect on a child’s learning.
Education leaders of today are recognizing
more and more the benefits of experiential education as a tool for conveying
essential academic principals. As most teachers know, there are different
types of intelligences. Using the experiential model we can use the natural
world to teach children and have fun at the same time. Knowledge gained
in the outdoors can be transferred to success in the traditional classroom
setting, as well as standardized tests, such as the MCAS.
At WEU our school programs can run anywhere
from one class period to a full day to an entire semester curriculum.
