Outdoor Wilderness Leaders
OWL’s Brief History Lesson
OWL’s started in 1979. Since then, it has been continuously teaching and inspiring the next generation. To begin, members need to be invited to join. This process entails a camper receiving 3 recommendations from staff and administration during the camp season because they are recognized as potential outstanding leaders. With these three recommendations, they are eligible to join for the following year as a fledging OWL. After one successful year of learning and growing with our group they become an OWL. OWL’s have backpacked all over New England, rode their bikes to Pennsylvania, New York, Maine & New Brunswick Canada. They have Scuba dove in the Bahamas and Curacao. In addition they have assisted WEU in leading thousands of participants in many different adventure experiences. Many OWL’s grow to become Wilderness Experiences Unlimited Summer Camp staff. As the confidence, certifications and leadership ability improves, this becomes a logical step for some OWL’s.
